Days after the historic vote that passed the Women’s Reservation Bill, President Droupadi Murmu granted her approval, and has became law. The new law grants women 33% reservation in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures.

On 29 September 2023, the Women’s Reservation Bill was signed by Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar before being passed on to President Murmu for her approval.

During a Special Session of Parliament held in September 2023, the Lok Sabha passed the Constitution Amendment Bill with nearly unanimous support and the Rajya Sabha with unanimous support.

It would take some time before the new legislation is put into effect since the delimitation (redrawing of Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies) process after the next census will verify the seats reserved for female candidates.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked that without appropriate participation of women in politics, one cannot talk about inclusive society and democratic integration.

On September 26, after dedicating a statue to BJP founder Deendayal Upadhyaya in Delhi on the occasion of his birth anniversary, the Prime Minister spoke at a BJP event, where he said that the party’s philosophy had also benefited from the Women’s Reservation Bill’s passing in Parliament.
