Vinod Tomar and Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and the BJP MP were granted interim bail by the Rouse Avenue court in Delhi till Thursday.
The Hearing for Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar’s bail will now take place on July 20, 2023.
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was given relief by the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate i.e., Harjeet Singh on a personal bond of Rs. 25,000. Vinod Tomar, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI)’s suspended assistant secretary, was also granted bail by the Court.
Following the issuance of a summons, Singh and Tomar appeared in court to request bail. The six-time MP was charged by the Delhi Police on June 15 under the Indian Penal Code’s (IPC’s) sections 354 (attack or criminal force on a woman with the purpose of violating her modesty), 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking), and 506 (criminal intimidation).
According to the chargesheet that the Delhi Police filed against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar, both of the accused are charged for a trial “without arrest” since they conformed with Section 41A of the Criminal Procedure Code by cooperating with the investigation.
Tomar was accused of violating IPC sections 109 (abetting any crime if the act is performed as a result and no specific provision is provided for its punishment), 354, 354A, and 506 (criminal intimidation).
When Singh’s advocate claimed there had been a media trial, the judge responded that he may file an application before the high court or the trial court. According to the judge, the court will issue an appropriate order on the application.
However, the counsel for Singh made no application in this respect. In addition to the current case, Singh was the subject of another FIR under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after complaints made by a young wrestler. She was one of the seven women wrestlers who had accused Singh of harassing them sexually.
Both FIRs included several claimed instances of sexual harassment, including unwanted touching, groping, stalking, and intimidation by Singh over the course of a decade at various times and locations.
