In response to a request to fill the open positions in the National Commission of Scheduled Castes, the Supreme Court sent notice to the Central government on January 29, 2024.

Following a request for a response from the government, a bench consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra scheduled a hearing for four weeks later.

The bench notified the Union government even before the petitioner’s attorney started to argue. The bench questioned whether or not they wanted notice when the Advocate demanded more prayers. The bench responded- “You want notice or not? We have issued notice”.

A bench consisting of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala requested in April of last year that the Centre make sure that positions in the National Commission for Scheduled Castes are filled as soon as possible.

At that time, the Ambedkar Association for Development filed a case with the highest court asking for appointments to the positions of chairperson/vice-chairperson and member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes to be made within a certain time frame.

Anglo-Indian communities and Scheduled Castes are protected against exploitation by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, an Indian constitutional agency whose goals are to advance and defend the social, cultural, educational, and economic interests of these groups.
