SC Collegium Recommends Appointment Of Five Permanent Judges In Madras HC

In a resolution dated August 31, 2023, the Collegium, consisting of Chief Justice of India Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, proposed the appointment of five more judges as Madras High Court permanent judges.

The Supreme Court Collegium suggested the following names after carefully weighing all the relevant factors including the High Court Collegium’s aforementioned suggestion:

  1. Justice A.A Nakkiran
  2. Justice Nidumolu Mala
  3. Justice S Sounthar
  4. Justice Sunder Mohan
  5. Justice Kabali Kumaresh Babu

The names of these five Additional Judges were unanimously recommended for appointment as permanent judges in the Madras High Court’s Collegium on June 20.

The Supreme Court Collegium said that it had spoken with other justices of the Supreme Court who are conversant with the affairs of the Madras High Court in light of the Memorandum of Procedure.

The SC Collegium stated that:

“The Committee of two judges of the Supreme Court constituted by the Chief Justice of India in terms of the Resolution dated 26 October 2017 of the Supreme Court Collegium has assessed the judgments of the above-named Additional Judges.”

The Collegium said that in order to determine the merit and appropriateness of these Additional Judges for appointment as permanent judges, it had carefully reviewed the information that had been filed.
