Zomato Board Approves Name Change From ‘Zomato’ to ‘Eternal’

Zomato will now be “Eternal Ltd”,  a name it had been using internally for over two years. In a regulatory filing submitted to the stock exchanges, the company stated that its board had approved the renaming from ‘Zomato Ltd’ to ‘Eternal Ltd’.

The stock exchange filing by Zomato mentions that the name change to “Eternal Ltd”  required clearance from shareholders, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and other statutory bodies, which have successfully approved for the same. Importantly, the Zomato food delivery brand and app will not be affected by this change.

Founder and CEO of Zomato Mr. Deependra Goyal, in a reflective message, talked about how Zomato started out in 2007 as ‘Foodiebay’, initially serving as a basic site for uploading restaurant menus. He shared that the company had managed to rise to prominence and become India’s first tech startup to be listed on the BSE Sensex—an achievement he found both gratifying and full of responsibility.

He acknowledged the wealth the company had generated for a wide range of stakeholders, but emphasized that wealth creation was not his primary goal. He had launched Zomato with the intention of doing something meaningful with his life.

According to Mr. Goyal, the rebranding to ‘Eternal’ was inspired by a long-term vision of building a lasting institution that would thrive beyond the current leadership. He felt that the relationship between institutions and individuals was reciprocal, and described the name change as a statement of purpose rather than a superficial rebranding.
