19th January 2024 marked the grand unveiling of the ‘Statue of Social Justice’ in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, a towering tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the visionary behind the Indian Constitution. Soaring to a height of 206 feet, this majestic monument joined the ranks of the world’s top 50 tallest statues, a league currently led by Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s ‘Statue of Unity.’ Notably, the second tallest statue of Ambedkar, standing at 175 feet, can be found in the neighbouring state of Telangana.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed the symbolic significance of the ‘206 feet Mahashilpam of Ambedkar,’ emphasizing its representation not only for the state but for the entire nation. This colossal tribute adds to the global landscape of monumental statues, with the ‘Statue of Unity’ being a noteworthy predecessor.
It is worth recalling that the preceding year witnessed the inauguration of the tallest Ambedkar statue outside India, named the ‘Statue of Equality,’ standing proudly at 19 feet in Maryland, USA. Crafted by sculptor Ram Sutar, renowned for his work on Sardar Patel’s statue, this international homage contributes to the enduring legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on a global scale.
