On 12th September, 2025, 2006 Mumbai train bombings accused, Wahid Shaikh, sought ₹9 crore in compensation for wrongful imprisonment and alleged custodial abuse. He was acquitted in 2015 after nine years in custody.
In a public letter, Shaikh described the demand as recognition of the injustice suffered by him and his family and as a measure of state accountability. He stated that earlier he had refrained from pressing the claim due to fear of reprisal, but recent judicial developments have reinforced his position.
The 2006 blasts on Mumbai’s Western Railway line killed 189 people and injured over 800. Thirteen men, including Shaikh, were arrested. He was accused of sheltering foreign operatives, but a special court acquitted him in 2015 for lack of evidence, while 12 others were convicted.
In July 2025, the Bombay High Court overturned those convictions, holding that the prosecution had failed to prove its case. Days later, the Supreme Court stayed the acquittal on the Maharashtra Government’s appeal but allowed the men to remain out of prison pending hearing.
