On Friday (4th July, 2025) the Centre Government officially announced names of two distinguished advocates, who will hold a prestigious position for two years as Additional judges of the Bombay High Court.

The newly appointed judges are:

1. Gautam Ashwin Ankhad

2. Mahendra Madhavrao Nerlikar

These appointments follow the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium on September 24.

It is noteworthy that, among the nine names proposed for judicial appointments to the Bombay High Court on September 24, 2024, the Central Government approved five candidates in October 2024, followed by one additional name—Justice Sachin Shivajirao Deshmukh—in May 2025. With the recent confirmation of Ankhad and Nerlikar, there remains one name, Rajesh Sudhakar Datar, still pending with the government.

The Bombay High Court, which has a sanctioned strength of 94 judges, has now increased its working strength to 65 following these recent appointments. This leaves a total of 29 vacancies within the court, highlighting the ongoing need for judicial resources and support.
