President Donald Trump has once again brought Apple’s global manufacturing strategy into the political spotlight. While visiting Qatar, Trump revealed he confronted Apple CEO Tim Cook about the company’s rapid expansion in India.
Trump stated he explicitly told Cook not to build more factories there unless they are intended strictly for the Indian market. “He is building all over India. I don’t want you building in India,” Trump said.
Earlier this month, Tim Cook had confirmed that India would become a significant manufacturing base for iPhones sold in the U.S. Apple has been diversifying its supply chain amid U.S.-China trade tensions, pandemic-related disruptions, and tariffs introduced during Trump’s previous term.
Over the last 12 months ending in March, Apple assembled $22 billion worth of iPhones in India—an increase of nearly 60% over the previous year.
Trump also revealed that India has proposed zero tariffs on American goods as part of efforts to negotiate a new trade agreement with Washington. While he praised the proposal, he did not elaborate on which sectors would be covered.
Most iPhones manufactured in India are produced at Foxconn’s plant in the south of the country. Tata Group, which recently acquired Wistron’s local operations and manages Pegatron’s facilities, is also a key player. Both companies are expanding rapidly, signaling India’s growing importance in Apple’s global production strategy.
