The in-house committee constituted by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to investigate the allegations linked to the recovery of a significant amount of unaccounted cash from the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma has commenced its probe.
The three-member panel, comprising Justice Sheel Nagu (Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court), Justice GS Sandhawalia (Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court), and Justice Anu Sivaraman (Judge of the Karnataka High Court), arrived at Justice Varma’s residence at approximately 1 PM to conduct its inquiry. The panel reportedly spent around 45 minutes at the premises as part of its investigation.
The matter came to light following a fire at Justice Varma’s residence on the evening of March 14. During firefighting operations, emergency responders inadvertently discovered a substantial cash pile. According to Times of India, Justice Varma and his wife were not present at the time, as they were traveling in Madhya Pradesh. Only his daughter and elderly mother were at home when the fire broke out.
The discovery of the cash has led to allegations of corruption against Justice Varma. However, he has firmly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that “this appears to be a conspiracy to frame me.”
In response to the controversy, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna took swift action by setting up the in-house inquiry committee on March 22. The probe aims to ascertain the veracity of the allegations and determine whether any misconduct occurred.
A video purportedly showing the recovery of the burnt cash was reportedly shared by the Delhi Police Commissioner with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Subsequently, the Supreme Court made this video available on its website, alongside a report prepared by the Delhi High Court Chief Justice on the incident. The Supreme Court has also published Justice Varma’s response to the allegations, ensuring transparency in the ongoing investigation.
The probe by the three-member committee is expected to bring clarity to the situation as it unfolds.
