On 23rd July, 2025, the Supreme Court of India, acting upon a formal request made by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), implemented restrictions on the entry of law interns on certain days of the week. According to a communication issued by the Assistant Registrar of the Court, law students will no longer be allowed to enter the Supreme Court premises on miscellaneous days, specifically Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays.
This decision was prompted by concerns raised by members of the legal fraternity, especially Senior Advocates, about the overcrowding caused by the presence of a large number of interns within the court’s premises on these days. In its letter dated July 23, the SCBA highlighted that the presence of interns in courtrooms, corridors, libraries, and waiting areas was contributing to significant congestion.
A particular grievance raised was that interns often occupy seats within the courtrooms and sometimes do not vacate them even when requested to do so by practising advocates, thereby causing inconvenience to members of the Bar. Taking note of these issues, the Supreme Court has agreed with the SCBA’s concerns and has introduced the said restrictions to ensure smoother functioning and better accessibility for advocates on busy days.
However, the Court has clarified that law interns will still be permitted entry on regular hearing days, namely Wednesdays and Thursdays, when the court generally hears fewer miscellaneous matters and the footfall is comparatively lower.
