Supreme Court Rejects Plea Alleging Nepotism In Senior Designations

Arham Jain

The Supreme Court of India, on Friday, February 7, 2025, dismissed the petition filed by Advocate Mathews J. Nedumpara, alleging the Delhi High Court for practicing nepotism in designating 70 lawyers at senior positions in the case of Shri Mathews J. Nedumpara & Ors. v. The Full Court of the Hon’ble Judges of the High Court.

The Advocate questioned the integrity of the Court and said that such nepotism undermines the principle of equality and meritocracy in the legal profession. His allegations mainly revolved around the contention that the nepotism occurred because of the personal or familial connections within the judicial system.

A Bench comprising of Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran firmly dismissed the petition stating that there was no special treatment in the senior designations. Justice Gavai also stated that he doesn’t see anybody getting any preferential treatment in the court irrespective of his background, designation or personal relations.

The Court by dismissing the plea also stated that the process of judiciary is completely based on the merits and professional standing. Court also affirmed that the judiciary will be fair and unbiased in its rulings by ensuring that the procedural criteria for conferring senior designations will be accessible and clear to the member of the law community.
