On 27 June, 2025 the Supreme Court of India ordered an immediate release of a 24 years old law student from Madhya Pradesh who had been detained under the National Security Act ,1980 (NSA) for nearly a year by police, on a ground of an altercation with professor at a university campus in Betul, in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The Court deemed that the preventive detention of the law student was wholly unreasonable.
The bench comprising of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Vinod Chandran emphasized that the reason for his detention, which included disruption of law and order, did not meet the requirements of Section 3(2) of the National Security Act 1980.
The student was detained following a dispute with a professor on June 14, 2024, which led to an FIR for attempted murder. On 16 June, Annu alias Aniket surrendered, he was placed in judicial custody, and a detention order was issued while he was in jail, citing the need to maintain peace, law & order. This order was extended multiple times, with the last extension lasting until July 12,2025.
However, the Supreme Court ruled that the grounds for his preventive detention were insufficient under the National Security Act and directed his release.
