On 12th June, 2025, two medical professionals have filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking urgent intervention following the Air India Flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed 265 lives. The plea calls for prompt action to ensure justice and adequate compensation for the victims and their families, urging accountability from the authorities involved.

It called upon the Supreme Court to acknowledge the incident and instruct the Centre to declare and distribute interim compensation of Rs. 50 lakh to each victim’s family, including resident doctors who were present at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, the site of the Air India plane crash.

The petition requested the formation of a high-level expert committee consisting of retired Supreme Court or High Court judges, aviation specialists, actuaries, and economists. This committee would be responsible for evaluating and determining final compensation, adhering to the principles established in Triveni Kodkany Vs. Air India Limited (Supra).

Additionally, the petition urged directives to Air India Limited to hasten the resolution of compensation claims, thereby preventing extended litigation for the bereaved families. Further reliefs sought included Government-sponsored rehabilitation initiatives such as job opportunities for eligible family members of the deceased. Furthermore, the petition insisted on a comprehensive investigation into the crash’s cause and the implementation of necessary measures to avert similar disasters in the future.

The Air India aircraft tragically crashed shortly after its departure from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. The flight carried 230 passengers, comprising 169 Indians and 53 British nationals, along with 12 crew members, of whom only one individual survived.

To date, at least 265 individuals lost their lives when the London-bound flight collided with a building housing resident doctors.
