The Supreme Court of India has on April 1, 2025, decided in a full court meeting that all 33 sitting judges will publicly disclose their assets. These details will be published on the Supreme Court’s website. A resolution was also adopted to ensure that future judges follow this practice.
The move comes in response to recent controversies regarding the judiciary’s transparency, particularly after a significant amount of cash was allegedly found at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma, who currently serves as a judge of the Allahabad High Court.
Previously, the publication of judges’ assets on the Supreme Court’s website was not mandatory. It was left to the discretion of individual judges to decide whether they wanted to disclose their assets publicly.
The practice of asset disclosure within the judiciary has evolved over time. In 2009, under public and internal judicial pressure, the Supreme Court first decided to publish judges’ asset details on its website. However, this decision was based on an earlier full court resolution from 1997, which made it mandatory for Supreme Court judges to disclose their assets to the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
While the 1997 resolution required judges to report their assets to the CJI, the 2009 resolution only made their publication on the website discretionary. This discretion has now been removed, making public disclosure a uniform requirement for all Supreme Court judges.
