The Supreme Court Collegium made a significant move from 1 July 2025 by interviewing at least 50 candidates over two days for High Court appointments, marking the highest number of face-to-face interactions in one session. Chief Justice Bhushan R Gavai, Justices Surya Kant & Vikram Nath are currently conducting interview. These extensive meetings with judicial officers & lawyers were conducting as they were recommended from High Courts across various states.
This approach prioritizes Personality Assessment over traditional vetting processes like reviewing judicial performance and gathering intelligence inputs. Interestingly, this took place during the Supreme Court’s summer recess, highlighting a commitment to ongoing judicial and administrative work. ‘These interactions are intended to extend the written record and provide insight into the candidate’s personality, temperament, and overall suitability,”. The meetings were conducted in two batches over two days at the Supreme Court.
CJl, addressed several cases in the last week of May. Two or three benches operated five days a week to hear both urgent and regular matters from May 26 to July 13, while judges also worked on drafting detailed judgments and preparing for upcoming cases.
This shift follows a precedent set last year when the Collegium revived personal interviews to address concerns about judicial conduct, particularly after issues related to Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav’s controversial remarks. The latest round of interviews solidifies this model as a crucial part of the collegium’s approach, especially following recent controversies involving current judges.
