The Supreme Court’s administrative wing has requested the Delhi Transport Department to allocate a specific vehicle registration number for a new Mercedes-Benz belonging to former Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud. According to an official communication dated July 28, the Deputy Registrar (Transport) of the Supreme Court has asked the Transport Commissioner to swiftly allot the preferred registration number.
This request highlights the practice of seeking personalized or “fancy” vehicle registration numbers, often by high-ranking officials, subject to availability. Justice Chandrachud, who retired on November 10, 2024, served as the 50th Chief Justice of India and delivered several landmark judgments during his tenure.
The allocation of special vehicle numbers is typically done based on availability and in accordance with the rules and regulations set by the transport department. The request for a specific registration number for Justice Chandrachud’s new vehicle is currently being processed by the Delhi Transport Department.
