Senior Advocate Vikas Singh has been elected President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for the 2025–2026 term, marking his fourth tenure in the coveted position. The Supreme Court, which had previously issued procedural directives to ensure the integrity and inclusivity of the electoral process, watched the closely watched contest in which Senior Advocate Vikas Singh defeated fellow candidates Senior Advocates Pradeep Rai and Adish C. Agarwala.
Senior Advocate Vikas Singh has held the SCBA presidency three times, from 2017 to 2018, 2021 to 2022, and 2022 to 2023, demonstrating his long standing popularity and influence in the Supreme Court. His re-election comes a year after Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal occupied the post for the 2024–2025 term.
The elections, conducted on May 20th (Tuesday), followed a Supreme Court directive dated May 6th (Tuesday), which mandated that the polling be conducted in accordance with the voter list finalised during the 2024 elections. However, the pex ourt broadened eligibility by allowing the inclusion of members who attained requisite qualifications up to February 28, 2025.
Significantly, the Court introduced gender-based affirmative action for the 2025 election cycle. It directed that the post of Secretary be exclusively reserved for a woman candidate. Further, it mandated that one-third of the seats in the Executive Committee i.e., 3 out of 9 and similarly, one-third of the Senior Executive Member positions i.e., 2 out of 6 be allocated exclusively to women. This measure marks a progressive step toward ensuring greater female representation in the leadership structure of the SCBA.
The ourt’s intervention in the electoral process of the Bar Association highlights a growing emphasis on transparency, representational diversity, and procedural fairness within professional legal institutions. With his election, Senior Advocate Vikas Singh is expected to steer the association through a dynamic phase, as debates over judicial reforms, legal education, and bar-bench relations continue to dominate discourse within the higher judiciary.
His return to the helm reaffirms both his stature in the legal community and the trust reposed in him by his peers, as the SCBA gears up for another year of advocacy and institutional engagement at the highest level of the Indian judiciary.
