The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court amid an in-house inquiry into allegations of cash discovery at his official residence.

The decision follows a controversy surrounding a fire incident that allegedly led to the recovery of large amounts of cash, prompting a deeper probe. The issue gained attention after reports on March 21 claimed that a fire at Justice Varma’s official residence on March 14 led to the discovery of sacks of cash.

In response, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna constituted a three-member committee for an in-house inquiry based on a report by Delhi High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyay, who recommended further investigation. Subsequently, the Supreme Court made public key documents, including the Delhi High Court CJ’s report, Justice Varma’s response, and evidence from the Delhi Police Commissioner.

The fire reportedly broke out at around 11:30 PM on March 14 while Justice Varma was out of town. Delhi Police Commissioner informed Chief Justice Upadhyay about the incident on March 15 at 4:50 PM. While reports suggest a significant cash discovery, Justice Varma has denied the allegations, calling them a conspiracy against him.

On March 24, the Delhi High Court, following the Supreme Court’s directions, withdrew judicial work from Justice Varma, signaling the seriousness of the inquiry against him.
