Students at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Patiala, have launched a protest against Vice-Chancellor Jai Shankar Singh after his alleged unauthorized entry into the girls’ hostel. On Sunday, Singh reportedly made a surprise visit, inspecting the rooms and making inappropriate comments about the students’ attire, which has sparked widespread outrage.
In a viral video, Singh is seen touring the hostel premises and assuring students that he was accompanied by a female warden. However, students argue that university rules do not allow even parents to enter the hostel without prior notice, let alone male university officials. One student remarked, “A male member cannot be allowed to enter the rooms of female students irrespective of how many female faculty members or guards accompany him.”
The protest intensified after the visit, with students staging a ‘dharna‘ outside the Vice-Chancellor’s residence on campus. They have vowed to continue boycotting classes until Singh is removed from his position. Another student expressed concern, stating, “This act is a complete disregard for the integrity and privacy of the female students.”
The university authorities have yet to issue a formal statement on the incident, while the students continue their protest, demanding accountability for the violation of their privacy.
