On 20 August 2025, a Public Interest petition has been filed with the Supreme Court. The petition calls for a special investigation team to look into claims made by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, about manipulating electoral rolls in Bengaluru Central & other areas.
The petition was filed by Advocate Rohit Pandey, asks the Election Commission of India (ECI) to make clear rules for the process of preparing, managing & publishing electoral rolls is transparent & accountable. And ECI publish electoral rolls in accessible, machine-readable formats, so that they can be easily verified & audited by the public.
On 7 August 2025 , Rahul Gandhi alleged that the electoral rolls in the Mahadevapura assembly constituency were manipulated & fake entries in the electoral rolls. If these actions are true then weaken the principle of ‘one person, one vote’ stated in Articles 325 and 326 of the Constitution.
The petitioner, after checking the authenticity of these claims with public government data, found enough evidence to suggest that these allegations indicate a serious attempt to weaken he value of legal votes. This situation demands immediate action from the Supreme Court.
The petition includes examples of alleged problems, such as 40,000 to 50,000 voters listed with the same addresses and names of their fathers in Karnataka, and about 80 voters registered at the same address in Chandrapur, Maharashtra.
According to the petition-
“We are not just talking about the results of one election; but talking about the integrity of the electoral rolls themselves, which are essential for our democratic process.”
