NIRF 2025 Law Rankings: NLSIU Bengaluru Stays On Top

On 4th September 2025 the Education Ministry has announced the NIRF 2025 list of top law colleges, and NLSIU Bengaluru has once again taken the number one spot, keeping its reputation as the most sought-after law school in the country.

At the second position is National Law University, Delhi, followed by NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (Kolkata) and Gujarat National Law University (Gandhinagar) complete the top five.

The next positions show a mix of institutions beyond the NLU system. IIT Kharagpur, which runs one of the oldest law programs within an IIT, stands at sixth place. Symbiosis Law School, Pune, has taken seventh, making it the highest-ranked private law school this year. Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University, both central universities in Delhi and Aligarh, hold the eighth and ninth spots. The tenth position has gone to Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan, Bhubaneswar, marking its entry into the top ten list.

The rankings are prepared on the basis of teaching standards, research output, placement records, outreach and perception. For aspiring law students, the list continues to show the dominance of the NLUs but also reflects the rise of private institutions that are steadily building their presence in legal education.
