Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud recently expressed strong criticism in open court regarding the repeated mentioning of the same case by different lawyers, an emerging practice that he found troubling. He emphasized that such tactics undermined the consistency and credibility of court proceedings. CJI Chandrachud warned that his discretionary powers would not be used to favor those attempting to manipulate the listing process by repeatedly bringing up the same case. He stressed that his personal credibility and the integrity of the court were at stake, and he would not allow the court to be taken for a ride by such practices.
This issue arose during a hearing when lawyers, in an apparent attempt to gain favorable rulings, mentioned a mining lease case multiple times on consecutive days. Chandrachud pointed out that this kind of behavior disrupts the normal functioning of the court and violates procedural consistency. He made it clear that any attempt to exploit judicial discretion would be firmly resisted.
“You cannot take the Court for a ride. My personal credibility is at stake. I have to follow standard rules for all.” Says Justice Chandrachud.
