Social activist Nikhil Ruparel on February 11, 2025 has filed a criminal complaint against YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia (Beer Biceps), comedian Samay Raina, YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani, and others, alleging obscenity in a controversial episode of ‘India’s Got Latent.’
The complaint, submitted through advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh in the Bandra Magistrate Court, raises concerns over the language and content aired during a bonus episode of the show on YouTube. Ruparel, president of the National Delegate NSUI Student Wing (Congress), argues that the content violated public decency and harmed younger audiences.
Ranveer Allahbadia allegedly made an obscene remark that went viral on social media, sparking backlash. Ruparel described the statement as “deeply offensive, obscene, and against public decency.”
The episode, filmed on November 14, 2024, at Khar Habitat but released recently, reportedly featured repeated abusive language by Allahbadia, Raina, Chanchlani, and panellist Apoorva Makhija. Ruparel warned that “The repeated exposure to such language can normalize disrespectful behaviour, erode mutual respect, and desensitize young individuals to the consequences of their words.”
Citing legal provisions, the complaint highlights violations under:
- Section 296 of BNS – Obscene acts in public spaces.
- Section 67 of the IT Act – Prohibiting the publication and transmission of obscene material online.
“The accused has made a statement that has the potential to create public mischief and outrage among various sections of society,” Ruparel stated.
Ruparel has urged the Bandra Magistrate Court to take cognizance and issue summons to the accused. The case has gained traction, with advocate Satyam Surana also filing a similar complaint before the Bombay High Court.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Police have reportedly initiated an inquiry into the allegations, potentially leading to further legal repercussions. The judiciary’s response will determine whether stricter measures will be enforced against inappropriate digital content.
