In a strong disciplinary move, the Meerut Bar Association removed 1,346 lawyers from its Bar Association Membership rolls due to their failure to pay their annual subscription fees. Another 1,500 advocates have been issued a final warning, wherein they have to clear their dues on or before July 15. 2025 or else they will have to face the same consequences.
Meerut Bar Association has taken this step due to the core reason of non-payment of the annual subscription fee even after repeated notices and deadlines. The last due date was in March 2025, but when that passed without compliance, the Association had no choice but to take action. The removed lawyers have now lost access to all the facilities, benefits, and rights that come with being an active member of the Bar Association.
The consequences imposed by the Association are serious to create awareness about the timely payment of the actual subscription fee. Lawyers who’ve been removed will no longer receive official communications; they are restricted to using the Bar infrastructure and lose voting rights in the Association. As for the 1,500 other lawyers with unpaid dues, they’ve been given a last deadline of July 15. 2025, i.e., settle everything. If they fail to do so, then their names will also be struck off from the Association.
To avoid such issues in the future, the Association has introduced a revised fee structure based on age:
- Lawyers Under 30: ₹1,500 (previously ₹1,100).
- Age Between 30 to 50: ₹5,100 (previously ₹2,150).
- Over Age of 50: ₹11,000 (lifetime fee, earlier ₹12,200)
The new rates introduced by the Association aim to ensure a fair and sustainable system, considering the range of services and support the Bar provides. The Association has also clarified that in case any lawyer whose name was removed can apply for reinstatement, but only after clearing all pending dues and completing any formalities required.
This bold step by the Meerut Bar Association is one of the largest clean-up efforts in recent years, sending a clear message that being part of the legal community means staying professionally responsible and financially accountable.
