Manmohan Singh Death: Government Declares 7-Day Mourning; Ex-PM’s Last Rites On Saturday

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was admitted to AIIMS Delhi on Thursday night in a critical state. Sadly, the hospital later confirmed his passing.

Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister and a distinguished Economist of India, has passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday night at AIIMS Delhi.

Manmohan Singh, who started his career in the Indian government as an economic advisor in the Commerce Ministry in 1971, had been dealing with health challenges for an extended period.

Born in Punjab in 1932, Manmohan Singh served two terms as India’s Prime Minister, leading the country from 2004 to 2014. Earlier this year, he concluded his 33-year tenure in the Rajya Sabha, marking his retirement from the House.

Congress leader KC Venugopal announced that Dr. Manmohan Singh’s last rites will take place in New Delhi on Saturday, with an official statement to follow shortly. According to a notice from the central government, the former Prime Minister’s funeral will be conducted with full state honours. His mortal remains were brought to his residence at 3 Motilal Nehru Marg late Thursday night and will be kept there for the public to pay their final respects.

The Union government announced a seven-day mourning period to honor former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. During this time, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across the country, and no official entertainment will take place. Indian missions and High Commissions abroad have also been instructed to observe the half-mast protocol. The Cabinet is scheduled to meet at 11 a.m. on Friday to pay tribute to the man hailed as the “Architect of India’s Economic Reforms.”

Leaders from around the world, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Barack Obama, along with citizens, united in mourning the passing of Manmohan Singh.
