On 1st March, 2025, Senior Advocate and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra was re-elected unopposed as the Chairman of the Bar Council of India (BCI) for an unprecedented seventh consecutive term. His continued leadership reaffirmed his influence and commitment to the legal fraternity. Notably, Mishra was also a BJP Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from Bihar.
Following his re-election, the BCI issued a press release highlighting his gratitude towards the legal community. “Soon after the announcement of his re-election for seventh term, Mr. Mishra expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the entire legal fraternity for their continued trust and support. He reaffirmed his unshakable resolve to serving the legal community & emphasized his dedication to the welfare of advocates. He further mentioned that Advocates Amendment Bill would be introduced, ensuring provisions for the well-being of advocates while excluding any contentious elements. Stressing on the importance of an independent Bar, he asserted that its autonomy should not be compromised. At the same time, he emphasized the necessity of introducing welfare measures, structured training programs for young lawyers within the Advocates Act and Advocate Protection Act, for strengthening and empowering the legal profession.”
Meanwhile, the contest for the position of BCI Vice Chairman was underway, with S. Prabhakaran from Tamil Nadu & Puducherry and Ved Prakash Sharma from Delhi competing for the role. The election for this crucial position was scheduled for March 2, after which the executive committee members were to be appointed under Mishra’s leadership.
Additionally, a national meeting of advocate representatives and members of the State Bar Councils was set to take place on May 17 in Delhi. The meeting aimed to address significant issues concerning the legal profession, including advocate welfare, the long-awaited Advocate Protection Act, and other key policy matters.
With Senior Advocate Manan Kumar Mishra securing another term, the legal fraternity anticipated proactive reforms aimed at strengthening the independence of the Bar and enhancing the welfare of advocates.
