Maha Kumbh Mela 2025: Allahabad High Court Orders Traffic Relief to Ensure Legal Proceedings Continue

Vanshika Bhalla

In a significant move to maintain the smooth functioning of legal operations during the ongoing Mahakumbh 2025, the Allahabad High Court on February 11, 2025 has directed the Police and Civil Administration to take immediate measures to alleviate traffic congestion. The Court emphasized that uninterrupted access for legal professionals is essential to uphold justice.

The directive follows reports from lawyers facing severe challenges in reaching the Courts due to the overwhelming influx of devotees attending the Mahakumbh Mela—one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

Single Bench of Justice J.J. Munir, presiding over a writ petition, acknowledged the immense public gathering but stressed that Court proceedings must not be disrupted. Legal representatives involved in the case highlighted severe traffic conditions that hindered legal professionals from fulfilling their duties. The petition was filed against the State of Uttar Pradesh in the case of Harkhu and 2 others v. State of U.P. and 8 others, with government counsels representing the state.

The Court ordered the Prayagraj Police Commissioner to implement special measures to prevent disruptions affecting the judiciary. These directions were officially communicated to the Commissioner of Police via the Chief Judicial Magistrate for strict compliance. The matter has been scheduled for the next hearing on February 18, 2025.

This proactive step by the Allahabad High Court underscores the importance of balancing religious festivities with essential civic functions, particularly ensuring the administration of justice during this grand event.
