On 27th June, 2025, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the gang rape of a student inside the South Calcutta Law College premises. This harrowing incident has sparked outrage across Kolkata. The crime, as detailed in the FIR registered at Kasba police station, allegedly occurred on the evening of June 25, 2025, between 7:30 p.m. and 10:50 p.m. within a guard’s room located on the ground floor of the college, adjacent to the students’ union office.

The survivor’s complaint paints a chilling narrative, alleging that the accused locked the main gate of the college and forcibly took her to the guard’s room, where they committed the assault while the guards were made to sit outside. She further stated that the accused filmed the act and threatened to release the footage. One of them allegedly attempted to strike her with a hockey stick.

Following the registration of the FIR, the Kolkata Police arrested Monojit Mishra, Pramit Mukherjee, and Zaib Ahmed between the morning of June 26 and the early hours of June 27. Mishra, identified as a former student and recently appointed temporary staff member of the college, is also associated with the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress. The other two accused are currently students of the college. They have been accused under Sections 127(2) (wrongful confinement), 70(1) (gang rape), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023

All three accused were produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Alipore, and remanded to four days of police custody. The investigating officer told the court that custody was essential to conduct a crime scene reconstruction, carry out medico-legal examinations, and verify the digital evidence, including obscene videos allegedly recorded by the accused on their mobile phones, which have since been seized. A medical examination of the survivor has been conducted at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, and proceedings for recording her confidential statement before a magistrate are underway.

The crime has triggered political and public uproar, particularly due to Monojit Mishra’s ties with the ruling party. Photographs of Mishra with prominent Trinamool leaders surfaced online, intensifying scrutiny. Vice-Principal Nayana Chatterjee confirmed that Mishra had been temporarily appointed by the college governing body around 45 days ago. Senior Trinamool leaders, including Dr. Shashi Panja and Trinankur Bhattacharjee, condemned the incident and reiterated the demand for swift implementation of the Aparajita Anti Rape Bill, which was passed following a similar crime last year at R.G. Kar Medical College.

The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and has sought a detailed action taken report from the Kolkata Police within three days. Meanwhile, protests erupted outside Kasba police station, with youth wings of opposition parties clashing with the police, leading to several detentions.

This case, coming less than a year after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor R.G. Kar Medical College, has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of women in educational institutions and public spaces in the city.
