A fast-track court in Kerala, that deals with POCSO cases, sentenced one Sunil Kumar to death on July 22nd, for killing his six-year-old nephew and ordered jail time till the end of his natural life for raping his 15-year-old niece, nearly two years ago at Anachal in Idukki, Kerala.
Idukki Fast Track Special Court Judge TG Varghese gave the verdict for capital punishment to the 50-year-old convict for murdering his nephew and cumulative imprisonment of 92 years including four life terms. The sentences will run concurrently. He is sentenced for multiple offences under IPC including rape, attempt to murder and kidnapping among others. A total fine of Rs 9.91 lakh is imposed on him. The court ordered that the death penalty shall be executed first, subject to the confirmation orders from the High Court or in the manner as directed by it.
As per the prosecution, the accused first hit his mother-in-law and then hit the boy with a hammer. The boy died on the spot. He then proceeded to attack the child’s mother and raped her minor daughter. Both women were critically injured and admitted to the hospital. He was caught the night the incident occurred using his mobile tower location.
The police informed the media that the accused was living separately from his wife and believed that his wife’s family was responsible for the strain in his marriage, so he wanted to take revenge. The girl was kept in captivity by the accused for hours. She later managed to escape to a neighbour for help, who found the two women in critical condition and informed the Vellathooval police immediately.
