On June 12, 2025, the Kerala High Court raised concerns over the prevalent practice of using plastic containers for delivering food and warned of possible health hazards associated with the ingestion of microplastics.

Justice Devan Ramachandran, while hearing the matter of Prasanna EV v. State of Kerala & Ors, instructed the Additional Director General of Prosecution to investigate the widespread use of plastic packaging for food deliveries and assess its public health implications.

During the proceedings, the judge raised concerns over the increasing dependency on food delivery services, especially among younger individuals, and questioned whether the materials used were safe for consumption, particularly when hot food is involved. He cautioned that the leaching of microplastics into food might contribute to a rise in severe health disorders, including cancer and organ damage affecting the liver, lungs, intestines, and colon.

The judge remarked on this trend and its troubling nature, not only from a judicial standpoint but also as a parent concerned about long-term health outcomes. He highlighted the lack of adequate scrutiny or regulatory response to this issue. In response, the Court directed state authorities to conduct a thorough review and assist the Bench by submitting informed suggestions.
