On 13th September 2025, the Bar Council of Kerala has decided to issue a show-cause notice to Advocate Yeshwanth Shenoy, president of the Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association, over a Facebook post. Mr Shenoy allegedly criticised a sitting judge of the High Court.

The post was made soon after the High Court dismissed a petition filed by Shenoy himself. In his plea, he had sought to quash disciplinary proceedings initiated against him by the Bar Council. However, Justice T R Ravi rejected the petition, paving the way for the proceedings to continue. These disciplinary proceedings relate to earlier allegations of misconduct during hearings in the courtroom of a former judge.

Following the dismissal, Shenoy reportedly turned to social media and made remarks critical of the judge who heard his case. The Bar Council, treating the issue seriously, resolved to ask Shenoy to explain his conduct. The notice seeks his response on why disciplinary action should not be taken against him, with the Council pointing out that such comments could be seen as lowering the authority and dignity of the judiciary.

The development has triggered conversations within the legal fraternity, particularly because Shenoy holds the influential post of Advocates’ Association president. The incident has also highlighted the growing tension between professional standards expected of lawyers and their use of social media as a platform to air grievances.

Shenoy will now have to respond to the Council’s notice. His explanation will decide the future course of action, including whether the Bar Council proceeds with further disciplinary measures.
