Karnataka HC to Kamal Haasan: Public Sentiments Cannot Be Hurt

Alok Singh

Kamal Haasan’s recent remark about the Kannada language sparked backlash and calls for an apology. In this matter, the Karnataka High Court focuses on protecting public sentiments and questions Haasan’s refusal to apologise. Consequently, Thug Life’s Karnataka release was postponed, while Tamil Nadu allowed special screenings.

On May 28, 2025, Kamal Haasan stated that the Kannada language originated from Tamil during a promotional event for Thug Life. This statement faced widespread criticism from Kannada-speaking communities, who claimed it was factually incorrect and culturally insensitive.

The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) demanded a public apology within two days, threatening to ban the film’s release in the state. Later, Haasan clarified his intention to highlight the shared linguistic heritage between Tamil and Kannada as they belong to the Dravidian family. He refrained from an explicit apology and expressed regret over any misunderstanding.

In light of the criticism and potential ban, Raaj Kamal Films International submitted a petition to the Karnataka High Court contesting the limitations placed on the film’s release. During the hearing on June 3, 2025, Justice M. Nagaprasanna questioned Haasan’s refusal to apologise, stating, “You may be Kamal Haasan or anybody, you cannot hurt the sentiments of the masses.”

The Court emphasised that public figures must exercise caution in their statements, especially on sensitive linguistic issues. While Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution of India provides freedom of speech, it is subject to reasonable restrictions under Article 19(2).

Amidst ongoing legal and public relations challenges, Kamal Haasan announced that “Thug Life” will not be released in Karnataka on June 5, 2025, and the Karnataka High Court hearing has been adjourned to June 10. The Tamil Nadu government also approved special screenings on the release day between 9 AM and 2 AM, supporting the film’s launch in the state.
