On April 9, 2025, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) raised ₹43.43 crore through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partnerships to support advocates’ health insurance and financial needs. The campaign, carried out under the banner of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), was a key promise of Mr. kapil Sibal during the SCBA presidential elections. The accomplishment was celebrated at the Supreme Court’s Library 2, where members of the Friday Group felicitated Kapil Sibal for his leadership.

Speaking at the event, Mr. kapil Sibal emphasized that the campaign was never about personal credit. “This Fund Is for the Bar, Not Me,” he said, highlighting that the initiative was for the legal community. He shared that business leaders across India, from Mukesh Ambani to Torrent, readily contributed. “Not a single person said no to me. From Mukesh Ambani to Torrent, just you name it. No friend of mine said no to me,” Mr. kapil Sibal noted, proudly adding that ₹45 crore had already been raised, with a goal of reaching ₹60 crore by April-end.

Advocate G Seshagiri, founder of the Friday Group, called on bar associations across the country to emulate this effort. “This kind of initiative must reach state and district bars, too. Let every bar association take responsibility for its own,” he urged. Mr. kapil Sibal also outlined a larger vision: creating a permanent insurance fund, estimating a ₹120 crore requirement, and disclosed that discussions with Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna were already underway. “The CJI said he would write to the government. If that doesn’t happen, we’ll ask Justice Gavai to issue a writ of mandamus,” he added with a light-hearted remark.

Concluding his address, Mr. kapil Sibal humbly redirected the applause to the legal fraternity. “I just did my duty,” he said, underlining the collective strength of the bar. “There’s nothing to congratulate me for. It’s my duty. I congratulate you for your camaraderie, for your support, for allowing this to happen.”
