The Central Government has officially notified on March 28, 2025 , the transfer of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma back to his parent Allahabad High Court. This decision follows the recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium, which was made on March 24.
The recommendation itself arose from a significant controversy that emerged after a fire at Justice Varma’s residence allegedly resulted in the recovery of a large amount of unaccounted cash by the firefighters. The Supreme Court Collegium arrived at its decision after conducting two meetings, one on March 20 and another on March 24.
The fire incident took place on the evening of March 14 at Justice Varma’s house, and the firefighters inadvertently discovered the cash while responding to the emergency. Additionally, a video showcasing the burnt cash was reportedly shared by the Delhi Police Commissioner with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. During the time of the incident, Justice Varma and his wife were not present in Delhi as they were traveling in Madhya Pradesh. Only his daughter and elderly mother were at home when the fire broke out.
Following the controversy, Chief Justice of India (CJI) initiated an in-house inquiry on March 21 to investigate the allegations. A three-member committee was constituted to conduct a thorough probe into the matter, which comprised of Punjab and Haryana Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh Chief Justice G.S. Sandhawalia, and Karnataka High Court Judge, Justice Anu Sivaraman. Simultaneously, the Supreme Court published a report that included the findings of the Delhi High Court Chief Justice on the incident, along with Justice Varma’s response.
Justice Yashwant Varma was born in 1969 and obtained his LLB degree from Rewa University in Madhya Pradesh. He enrolled as an advocate in 1992 and built an extensive legal career, serving as special counsel for the Allahabad High Court and as the chief standing counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh. His legal expertise earned him the designation of Senior Advocate in 2013. He was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court in October 2014 and was subsequently made a permanent judge in February 2017. Later, he was transferred to the Delhi High Court, where he assumed office on October 11, 2021.
