The Manipur High Court has a new Chief Justice, Justice M. Sundar. His appointment was officially announced by the Union Government on September 13, 2025. This decision followed the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium two days earlier. Justice Sundar takes over from Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, who retired on September 14 after a short tenure. The change in leadership comes at a time when the High Court is handling many important cases.
Justice M. Sundar was born in Chennai on July 19, 1966. He studied law at Madras Law College and was part of the first batch of the five-year integrated course. After completing his studies, he became an advocate in 1989. For many years, he practiced mainly civil law in the Madras High Court. He also served as the Executive Chairman of the Madras State Legal Services Authority, working to make legal help more accessible to people.
In 2016, Justice Sundar became a judge at the Madras High Court. After serving there for several years, he has now been appointed Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. His selection was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, which took into account his long experience and contributions to the judiciary.
With Justice Sundar taking charge, the Manipur High Court is expected to see some improvements. He has spent many years working in civil law and helping people get legal support. Many believe that his guidance will help the court deal with cases more quickly and reduce delays in giving judgments.
