On Monday 17 March 2025, Justice Joymalya Bagchi took the oath of office as a Supreme Court justice. Sanjiv Khanna, the Chief Justice of India (CJI), pronounced the oath of office.
The Supreme Court now has 33 judges, one fewer than its maximum strength of 34.
On March 6, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Bagchi for elevation, and on March 10, the Central government approved the recommendation.
On June 27, 2011, Justice Joymalya Bagchi was appointed to the High Court of Calcutta. On January 4, 2021, he was moved to the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. He has been working in the Calcutta High Court since November 8, 2021, when he was repatriated. He has almost 13 years of experience as a High Court Judge.
After Justice KV Viswanathan retires in May 2031, Justice Bagchi, who will have served in the Supreme Court for more than six years, will take over as Chief Justice of India (CJI).
He will, however, only hold the position of CJI for a brief time because will be retiring in October 2031.Following the retirement of the late CJI Altamas Kabir in 2013, Justice Bagchi would be the first CJI from Calcutta.
