Justice Bela M. Trivedi has chosen to retire early from the Supreme Court, with her last working day now set for 16th May, 2025, instead of 9th June.

To mark her departure, a ceremonial bench will be convened on the same day, comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Trivedi, and Justice Augustine George Masih. Such ceremonial benches are traditionally held to honour the contributions of retiring judges and to allow members of the Bar and Bench to formally bid farewell.

The early retirement decision coincides with the Supreme Court’s summer recess, which begins on 23rd May, effectively reducing the number of working days remaining before her scheduled retirement. By stepping down on 16th May, Justice Trivedi ensures her departure is marked within a regular sitting of the Court.

Justice Trivedi has had a distinguished judicial career spanning nearly three decades. She began her journey on the Bench as a Judge of the City Civil and Sessions Court in Ahmedabad on 10th July, 1995. After serving at the trial court level, she was elevated to the Gujarat High Court on 17th February, 2011. Her judicial acumen and commitment to justice earned her a place in the Supreme Court of India on 31st August, 2021.

Throughout her tenure, Justice Trivedi has been known for her sharp legal reasoning, clarity in judgments, and a strong commitment to the rule of law. Her contributions to constitutional matters, criminal law, and women’s rights have been particularly noteworthy.

Her early departure marks the end of a significant chapter in the Indian judiciary. The ceremonial sitting on 16th May will provide an opportunity for the legal fraternity to reflect on her legacy and express their appreciation for her service.
