On 14th May 2025, following the retirement of current CJI Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai will sworn in as the next CJI. In line with tradition, the current Chief Justice has submitted a proposal to the Union Law Ministry, recommending Justice Gavai as his successor. The Ministry had previously requested the Chief Justice to suggest a name for the next Chief Justice of India.
Justice B. R. Gavai would be serving as the Chief Justice of India for a tenure of approximately six months. He will be the second Dalit to hold the position of Chief Justice, succeeding Justice KG Balakrishnan, who was appointed to this prestigious role in 2007.
Justice Khanna began his term as the 51st Chief Justice of India on November 11, 2024, following the retirement of former Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud on November 10. Justice Gavai is expected to assume the role of the 52nd Chief Justice of India, with his retirement projected for November 2025.
Justice B.R. Gavai, being a permanent member of the Supreme Court, has contributed to numerous landmark ruling over the years. This includes the ruling that supported the Central Government’s 2016 Demonetization policy and the Supreme Court’s decision declaring the electoral bonds initiative unconstitutional. He was also part of the five-judge panel that unanimously supported the Central Government’s 2019 decision to revoke Article 370, which provided special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir.
