On May 14, 2025, Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai took oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI), succeeding Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of several prominent dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and former President Ram Nath Kovind. Following the ceremony, Justice Gavai paid tribute to B.R. Ambedkar at the Supreme Court premises. With this appointment, Justice Gavai has become the first member of the Buddhist community and only the second individual from the Scheduled Castes to assume the highest position in the Indian judiciary. His appointment was officially notified by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on 29th April 2025, after then Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna recommended him as his successor.
The notification stated that the President had exercised the powers under Clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution to appoint Justice Gavai as CJI effective from 14th May 2025.
Justice Gavai’s legal career includes serving as Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench in August 1992, and later as Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor at the same bench starting January 17, 2000.
Elevated to the Supreme Court on 24th May 2019, he has since participated in nearly 700 benches and delivered approximately 300 judgments. Some of his notable rulings include upholding the abrogation of Article 370, striking down the electoral bond scheme, and validating the 2016 demonetization policy.
