IndiGo, India’s leading low-cost carrier, is set to expand its international presence by launching non-stop flights to 10 new destinations in FY26. This ambitious plan will increase its global network from 40 to 50 destinations, reinforcing its position in the international aviation market.
New destinations and fleet expansion
The new routes will connect India to major cities including London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Athens, and Siem Reap, alongside four undisclosed cities in Central Asia. To support this growth, IndiGo will introduce newly leased Boeing 787 aircraft and Airbus A321XLRs, both expected to join the fleet in the latter half of FY26.
Strategic partnerships over alliances
CEO Pieter Elbers emphasized that IndiGo will continue to favour flexible bilateral codeshare agreements over formal membership in global airline alliances like Star Alliance, SkyTeam, or oneworld. This approach ensures greater adaptability to diverse markets without the constraints of alliance commitments.
Capturing underserved markets
Elbers highlighted significant growth potential in international markets, particularly in Europe, where Indian carriers currently handle only 30% of passenger traffic. The introduction of long-haul aircraft positions IndiGo to capitalize on these underserved routes.
Long-term investment in wide-body operations
In 2024, IndiGo placed an order for 30 Airbus A350 wide-body aircraft, marking its entry into long-haul operations. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027, with no possibility of acceleration due to Airbus’s constrained production schedule.
