IIM Udaipur Exits CAP, Introduces Institute-Specific Selection Process

IIM Udaipur has decided to make a big shift in the way it admits students for its flagship Two-Year MBA program, starting with the 2026–28 batch. Instead of being part of the Common Admission Process (CAP), which is followed by the newer IIMs, the institute will now carry out its own admission process. The move shows that IIM Udaipur is looking to strengthen its independence and design a system that matches both its academic goals and global outlook.

Up until now, the institute took part in CAP, where interviews and selections for multiple IIMs were conducted together. That arrangement certainly made things simpler for candidates, but it also meant the institute had less flexibility in setting its own benchmarks. By stepping out of CAP, IIM Udaipur hopes to create a selection process that reflects what it values most in students and gives it more control over the kind of talent it brings in.

Under the revised system, candidates taking CAT 2025 will be shortlisted according to IIM Udaipur’s own criteria. Those who make the cut will then go through the next stages of selection, which will involve a Written Ability Test (WAT) and a Personal Interview (PI). To make things easier for applicants, these rounds won’t be limited to the Udaipur campus alone. They’ll also be held in major cities across the country, so candidates from different parts of India can take part without having to travel too far.

Prof. Vijayta Doshi, Dean (Programs) at IIM Udaipur, noted that in just over ten years, the institute has built a strong reputation both nationally and internationally. She added that as the institute pushes toward becoming a globally recognized management school, the admission process also needs to reflect its academic standards and long-term goals.

Students are likely to see both pros and cons in this shift. Applying separately to IIM Udaipur means extra effort compared to the earlier system, but it also gives them space to stand out. Instead of blending into a large common pool, they’ll now get the chance to connect with the institute more directly and show why they belong there. For many, that makes the process feel less mechanical and more personal.
