Judge Hilary Charlesworth, a distinguished member of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), graced the Supreme Court bench chaired by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud on 12th February 2024, marking her presence in the judicial proceedings. Amidst the solemnity of the occasion, she paid homage to the revered figures of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar with floral tributes within the court premises.
Expressing warm regards, Chief Justice Chandrachud extended a hearty welcome to Judge Charlesworth, highlighting her esteemed background and previous association with Mayo College. He affectionately referred to her as a “friend of India,” underscoring her stature as a distinguished jurist.
“We all welcome her Ladyship to the court,” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said.
Judge Charlesworth’s visit to India coincided with the Supreme Court’s diamond jubilee celebration, where she participated in the annual lecture series. On 10th February, she delivered an insightful lecture titled “The International Court of Justice: A Legal Forum in a Political Environment” at the Supreme Court, sharing her expertise and perspectives on the subject.
As an Australian international lawyer and esteemed member of the ICJ since November 5, 2021, Judge Charlesworth’s presence added depth and value to the discourse surrounding international law and judicial proceedings. Her engaging lecture provided invaluable insights into the functioning of the ICJ within the broader political landscape.
