On 20th June 2025, the South Mumbai District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission issued a notice to the global luxury fashion brand Gucci in response to a consumer complaint filed by Advocate Ali Kaashif Khan Deshmukh.
The complaint arises from an incident that took place on 6th March 2024, when Deshmukh purchased a pair of shoes worth ₹75,500 from Gucci’s Mumbai outlet. According to the complainant, he discovered within an hour of the purchase that the shoes were defective — specifically, there was a noticeable difference in elevation between the two shoes. This defect allegedly caused him to stumble and fall in public, resulting in both physical pain and public embarrassment.
Deshmukh promptly returned to the store, but claims he was redirected and later received unhelpful and dismissive treatment from staff at Gucci’s Bandra Kurla Complex outlet. A written acknowledgment from Gucci dated 7th March, 2024, confirmed that their internal inspection found a slight difference in the shoes’ elevation.
Despite the acknowledgment, Deshmukh alleges that the store failed to address the issue satisfactorily, forcing him to spend an additional ₹9,500 on a replacement pair. However, this did not alleviate the mental anguish, emotional trauma, and humiliation caused by the incident. In his plea, filed under the Consumer Protection Act, Deshmukh has accused Gucci of deficiency in service and unfair trade practices. He holds the luxury brand responsible for selling defective goods and failing to uphold the standards of customer service expected from a reputed international label.
The complaint further claims that the incident led to a loss of confidence and caused significant emotional distress, in addition to physical injury. Consequently, Deshmukh is seeking a compensation amounting to ₹1.14 crore, which includes general and special damages for mental agony, public humiliation, wasted time, and litigation expenses. The Commission’s coram, comprising President Sadik Ali B Sayyad and Member Gauri M Kapse, has issued notices to Guccio Gucci S.p.A. (Italy), as well as to its Mumbai outlets at Trident Hotel and Jio World Plaza, in this matter.
