GLC Mumbai Warns Students Over Podcast, Sparks Backlash from Alumni

On August 1, 2025, Government Law College (GLC), Mumbai, issued a public notice. The notice warned students of potential legal action for using the college’s name in a podcast titled “GLC Law and Lore.” This move sparked significant backlash from the legal community and alumni.

The podcast, created by four recent GLC graduates, Anjali Singit, Dhun Vinod Santosh, Jinay Jain, and Pakhi More, aims to document conversations with legal professionals, many of whom are also GLC alumni. The college, however, in a notice signed by Principal Dr. Asmita A. Vaidya, stated that the use of the abbreviation ‘GLC’ in the podcast’s branding was unauthorised and misleading. It clarified that the college had no affiliation or endorsement of the podcast and warned the creators against using the institution’s name for promotional purposes, cautioning that continued use might result in legal action.

This stance was strongly criticised by Justice Gautam Patel, a former judge of the Bombay High Court and a GLC alumnus who had previously appeared as a guest on the podcast. In a sharply worded letter to the Principal, Justice Patel expressed dismay over the college’s position, emphasising that the students’ initiative was born out of pride in their alma mater. He described the podcast as a respectful and meaningful effort by young graduates to give back to their institution. Dismissing the administration’s objections, Justice Patel pointed out that ‘GLC’ is not a trademark or proprietary label, but a name that evokes a lifelong association for its alumni. He argued that such student-led efforts should be encouraged rather than discouraged and described the college’s threat of legal action as “contemptible and disgraceful.”

Justice Patel further offered his pro bono legal support to the students, stating that no educational institution head should threaten their own students for celebrating their academic heritage. He emphasised that GLC belongs to its alumni as much as to the current administration and that pride in one’s institution should not be stifled by bureaucratic restrictions. The GLC Law and Lore team also issued a clarification, noting that their podcast was created independently without institutional backing, solely to provide insights into the legal profession for young aspirants. They reiterated that their content has always celebrated, rather than harmed, the college’s legacy.
