On 20th June,2025, the Delhi High Court instructed Google to take down a YouTube channel that was falsely presenting deepfake videos of journalist Anjana Om Kashyap. The case was brought by TV Today Network, the parent company of Aaj Tak, seeking to prevent unauthorized use of its anchor’s identity and brand.
The Court was informed that the content uploaded on the channel featured manipulated visuals, making it appear as if Kashyap was presenting news on behalf of the network. The judge observed that even the spelling of her name was altered to deceive viewers. The Court remarked “Considering the identity of the defendant no 2, the missing P in the word Kashyap, it is clear that the same appears to be a fake page. Such fake YouTube pages and fake profiles being made using her goodwill, reputation and personality is contrary to law. Accordingly, the plaintiff has made out a case for interim injunction,“.
Acting on these concerns, the Court ordered Google to remove the channel within 48 hours and provide details of the account holder within two weeks. It also asked for a report on the revenue generated by the fake content and clarified that any future instances of similar impersonation should be promptly flagged and taken down by the platform.
TV Today’s counsel, Advocate Hrishikesh Baruah, argued that the channel was publishing false content using Kashyap’s image to spread misinformation and earn money. He stated, “They upload fake videos including purported fake videos which do not belong to her.” Google’s representative confirmed their willingness to remove the content, though Kashyap had not personally joined the legal proceedings. Still, the Court directed her to be included as a necessary party in the suit.
