The Delhi High Court has conferred the designation of Senior Advocate on 70 lawyers, marking a significant recognition of their professional standing and contributions to the legal fraternity. This designation is a prestigious honor that acknowledges their expertise, advocacy skills, and distinguished service in the field of law.
Some notable names in the list include Tanveer Ahmed Mir, Sai Deepak J., Arundhati Katju, and Rajdipa Behura, among others, reflecting a diverse group of accomplished legal professionals. This step is part of the judiciary’s initiative to strengthen the representation of seasoned advocates in the legal system.
Over 300 lawyers had applied and were interviewed by the Delhi High Court. Applicants who scored between 65 and 69 marks have had their profiles deferred for consideration.
This marks the first instance since March 2021 that the High Court has awarded the senior designation. Back in 2021, 55 lawyers were granted the honor.
Under the updated High Court of Delhi Designation of Senior Advocate Rules, 2024, all matters concerning the conferral of the Senior Advocate title are handled by a Permanent Committee.
The Permanent Committee includes the Chief Justice, the two senior-most judges of the High Court, the Additional Solicitor General, a Senior Advocate chosen by the Administrative Committee from a list of three lawyers proposed by the Delhi government, and a representative nominated by the Bar Association.
The Secretariat of the Permanent Committee compiles a list of candidates, including their detailed information and past records. In addition to the interview process, the Permanent Committee evaluates candidates based on various criteria, such as years of practice, pro bono contributions, publications, and other relevant factors.
