On 9th May, 2025, the Delhi High Court closed the case after Ramdev pledged to stop making disparaging remarks about Hamdard’s Rooh Afza.
Justice Amit Bansal noted that the statements made by Ramdev and Patanjali Foods Ltd. in their affidavits were binding and decreed the lawsuit in favor of Hamdard National Foundation India. Previously, the Court had directed the removal of controversial online content regarding Rooh Afza and instructed Ramdev and Patanjali to submit an undertaking.
The case was heard in connection with a lawsuit filed by Hamdard National Foundation India against Ramdev and Patanjali Foods Ltd. over disparaging remarks made during the promotion of Patanjali’s “gulab sharbat.” Hamdard alleged that while promoting the product, Ramdev claimed that profits from Hamdard’s Rooh Afza were being used to fund madrasas and mosques.
On 22nd April, the Court requested an affidavit from Ramdev and Patanjali, requiring them to assure the court they would refrain from making similar statements, social media posts, or advertisements in the future regarding competitors’ products. The Court expressed strong disapproval of Ramdev’s “sharbat jihad” remark about Rooh Afza, calling it indefensible, and insisted that he remove all related videos and social media content immediately.
Hamdard’s counsel pointed out that, contrary to the Court’s earlier directive, Ramdev had only made the objectionable YouTube video private rather than deleting it. In response, Ramdev’s counsel expressed deep respect for the Court and assured full compliance with its orders.
After a warning on 1st May about potential contempt action, Ramdev’s lawyer promised that the remaining objectionable content would be removed within 24 hours.
