Delhi High Court Asks Police About AI Software to Trace Missing Persons

Shreya Gupta

On 17 February, 2025, the Delhi High Court inquired whether the Delhi Police possesses any Artificial Intelligence (AI) software that could be utilized to trace missing persons in the capital. This query was raised by a Division-Bench comprising Justices Prathiba M Singh and Dharmesh Sharma in the case of Dil Khush Bairwa v. Govt of NCT of Delhi and Ors.

The Court directed the State to file a short affidavit clarifying whether such AI software exists or has been used by the police to track individuals who have gone missing due to various circumstances, including unstable medical conditions. The case before the Court involved a petition filed by a man seeking information about his father, who has been missing since February 2023.

As per the status report submitted by the Delhi Police, despite following the requisite procedures, the missing person could not be located. In light of this, the Court ordered the police to make an attempt to trace the petitioner’s father using AI-based software, if available, and to submit a fresh status report incorporating the results. The matter has been scheduled for the next hearing on March 18.

The petitioner, Dil Khush Bairwa, was represented by advocates Ahsan Sanjar, Kamlesh Kumar Mishra, Nitin Kumar Natak, Renu, and Arpita. On behalf of the State, Standing Counsel Sanjay Lao, along with advocates Priyam Agarwal and Abhinav Arya, appeared before the Court.
