Delhi Bar Council Warns Lawyers Against Social Media Promotions

On 04th September, 2025, the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) has issued a strong warning to advocates, asking them to stop using social media to promote their legal services. The Council said that more and more lawyers are posting their work online, which goes against professional ethics and affects the dignity of the legal profession.

In a notice released by Chairman Surya Prakash Khatri, the BCD pointed out that some advocates are sharing videos, interviews, and even case-related images to attract clients. Such activities, the Council said, amount to “unethical canvassing” and are not allowed under the rules governing the legal profession.

The notice also highlighted the growing number of “legal influencers” on social media. Many of them, according to the Council, are not even registered to practice law but still share opinions on sensitive cases. This misleads the public and directly violates Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules, which clearly prohibits advocates from advertising their services.

The BCD reminded lawyers that breaking this rule counts as professional misconduct. Under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961, disciplinary action can be taken, including suspension or even cancellation of a license to practice.

The Council has instructed all advocates to remove such online content immediately. If they fail to do so, action will be taken against them individually.

With this directive, the Bar Council of Delhi has made it clear that the legal profession must remain rooted in ethics, and lawyers are expected to uphold its dignity both inside and outside the courtroom.
